Digital preservation
Digital preservation for a digital world.
Technology evolves and changes at an ever-growing pace. Leverage the power of digital preservation to guarantee the long-term legibility and use of your valuable data.
Guarantee long-term legibility of digital content
Records are human-readable, forever
Automatically preserve all common file formats with the click of a button
As both hardware and software evolve, the importance of digital preservation increases. Any organisation which needs to retain digital content for more than 10 years should assess their need for digital preservation.
Without the proper digital preservation tools and expertise, data is at risk of becoming digitally illegible and unreadable to humans. Future use would cost great time, effort and expense, or even render the data completely unusable.

Digital Preservation FAQs
How do I know if I need to apply digital preservation to my data
Typically, we would recommend a minimum retention period of 10 years before considering digital preservation. While technology is evolving at an ever-increasing pace, the vast majority of commonly used formats will not become obsolete in the short term.
How many file formats does Arkivum support?
As standard, Arkivum supports well over one hundred of the most common formats. This includes the Microsoft Office Suite, a range of video and audio formats and email. If you would like to discuss your requirements in more detail, please contact us.
What happens when a long-term format becomes obsolete?
Arkivum continually monitors digital preservation best practices for any changes in recommended long-term formats. If a long-term format were to become obsolete in future, it is possible to run preservation again on the affected data and generate new long-term copies in the new recommended long-term format.
Can I apply preservation after ingesting data into the archive?
Yes, it is possible to apply digital preservation either at ingest of data into the archive or once the data has already been ingested.
Does the digital preservation process replace the original version of the file?
No, the digital preservation process generates a copy of the file in the associated long-term format. No processes in the Arkivum solution will delete original versions of data.
You have referenced digital preservation good practice. Where does this come from?
Arkivum is an active member of the digital preservation community. A large part of this is in working and collaborating with organisations such as the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and the National Data Stewardship Alliance (NDSA).
These organisations help to promote and develop digital preservation good practices for the overall betterment of the discipline.
