Arkivum Celebrates World Digital Preservation Day

News Anthony Wells

Today, on World Digital Preservation Day, we celebrate the importance of preserving our digital heritage because every day, vital digital records, evidence of discovery, creativity, and memory are at risk of being lost. From clinical trials to cultural collections, preserving these assets ensures they remain accessible, legible and usable for decades to come.

Here are some examples of why digital preservation matters for organisations across different industries:

  • Pharma & Life Sciences: Regulatory compliance is essential in this industry. Barts Health NHS Trust moved their clinical records from a file-sharing platform to a dedicated preservation system, ensuring MHRA regulatory compliance and inspection readiness. Meanwhile, Galapagos transitioned data from a live system to a preservation platform, achieving compliance with EU CTR (which requires a minimum of 25 years retention of essential records) and ICH E6 R3.
  • Higher Education: At this year’s Digital Preservation Conference, ArkFest we saw how The University of Southampton is championing digital preservation through the introduction of a dedicated advisory unit, designed to provide guidance, training, and support for organisations implementing good preservation practices. During their session they acknowledged how many in the academic sector are becoming increasingly aware of the risks associated with physical storage, such as floppy disks and external drives and the importance of ensuring the contents are properly preserved.
  • Heritage & Culture: For organisations like The Macallan, digital preservation allows them to retain rich archives and brand heritage, keeping cultural stories accessible for the future. We’re also proud to support institutions such as the UNHCR, where preserving digital collections helps protect the stories, voices, and memories of entire communities worldwide.

Preserving today’s digital world is an investment in tomorrow’s understanding. At Arkivum, this mission drives us every day.
